Canon ink absorber replacement: check whether service is required

Published by Alphatech · Updated October 11, 2026

An ink absorber or waste-ink warning is a maintenance question, not simply a print-driver fault. Canon printers differ in how waste ink is handled and whether a component is designed for user replacement.

Identify the exact warning and model

Record the support code and full printer name. Open its official manual and check the maintenance or error section. Do not assume that a removable maintenance cartridge on one model means another model’s internal absorber is user-replaceable.

Check the permitted procedure

If the manual describes a user-replaceable component, follow the part specification and handling instructions for that model. If it directs you to service, use Canon’s repair resources. Avoid dismantling the printer based on a generic video.

Do not confuse a reset with replacement

Clearing a counter does not itself remove accumulated ink or confirm that the physical condition is safe. An undocumented reset may hide the warning while leaving the maintenance need unresolved.

For a displayed 5B02 code, see our 5B02 guide and confirm the model’s own instructions. Before arranging repair, note the purchase information and follow the provider’s transport advice. Our Canon service preparation guide explains what to record and what to ask about an estimate.
