Connect a Canon printer to a laptop: choose the right route

Published by Alphatech · Updated October 11, 2026

Connecting a Canon printer to a laptop starts with two details: the exact model and the laptop’s operating system. There is no single setup sequence that fits every Canon printer.

Choose USB or network printing

For USB, check that the laptop has a suitable port or compatible adapter and use the model’s installation sequence. For network printing, prepare the printer’s connection first and confirm that the laptop can communicate on the same intended network. Guest networks may restrict device discovery.

Get model-specific setup instructions

Find the printer through Canon Support. Use its compatible downloads and manual. We also have separate guides for the MG3600 series, TR4720 and TS3522.

Verify the printer selected on the laptop

After setup, print a short document and confirm that it reaches the intended device. If there are multiple entries with similar names, check their connection details before deleting one. Note whether the printer can produce its own test page.

If only the laptop fails, record its system version and the exact software error. If the printer itself displays a code, look up the device’s manual. Our Canon troubleshooting overview helps choose the next check.
