QuickBooks cannot connect to a company file: first checks
A company-file connection error can come from a missing path, a network interruption or the configuration of QuickBooks Desktop. Capture the exact error code and file location before trying a repair. Do not overwrite the company file while investigating.
Preserve the data
Confirm that a recent backup exists and that the responsible person knows how to restore it. Coordinate with other users before restarting a host computer or changing shared access. Avoid making separate working copies that later need to be reconciled.
Compare local and network access
Identify whether the file lives on this computer or a server. Note whether all users lose access or only one workstation. Ask the administrator to check the expected network path and permissions. Do not disable the firewall or broaden access as a general workaround.
Use the instructions for the exact message
Read Intuit’s lost company-file connection guidance. A numbered error may have its own procedure. Use only official tools and instructions compatible with your QuickBooks version.
If the problem persists, contact official QuickBooks support. Prepare the version, error, file path and results of the comparison. Company data may contain customer and employee records; do not send it to an outside provider without understanding why it is needed and how it will be handled.
